New Cultural Landmark Stands on Old Industrial Site

Lujiazui Harbour City Exhibition Center, a new cultural landmark located in Shanghai's Lujiazui area, has completed its construction stage. The announcement was made by the project's designer, the Netherlands-based Office for Metropolitan Architecture.

The exhibition center was a result of a cooperation deal struck between the China State Shipbuilding Corporation and CITIC Pacific Ltd in 2005.

According to the deal, the two companies pledged to develop the 43.77 square meter space into a commercial area known as Lujiazui Binjiang Financial City. The area was the original site of Shanghai Shipyard and the new exhibition center forms an integral part of the scheme.

In order to mimic an industrial style, the center was designed with a latticed surface and a steel exterior structure. The design aims to show a combination of the area's history and its modern development.

Once open to the general public, the center will function as a theater and a cultural venue for fashion shows, music concerts, art exhibitions, and many other events.
