What are thin, thick and ultra-thin fireproof coatings?

Thin, thick, and ultra-thin fireproof coatings are categorized according to coating thickness and fire resistance limit. The following are their specific definitions and characteristics:

1. Thin-type fireproof coating:

Coating thickness: greater than 3mm, less than or equal to 7mm.

Decorative effect: with certain decorative effects.

Fire resistance limit: less than 2 hours.

Composition: usually water-based polymer as the base material, adding fire retardant composite system, fire additives, fire-resistant fibers, and other components.

Fireproof principle: the same as ultra-thin fireproof coating, i.e. expansion and thickening under high temperature to form a fire-resistant heat insulation layer.

2. Ultra-thin fireproof coating:

Coating thickness: less than or equal to 3mm.

Decorative effect: good decorative effect.

Fire resistance limit: generally within 2 hours.

Composition: Generally solvent-based system with superior bonding strength, good weather, and water resistance, good leveling, and good decorative features.

Fireproofing principle: slowly expanding and foaming to form a dense and solid fireproof heat insulation layer when it is subjected to fire, which can slow down the temperature rise of steel.

3. Thick fireproof coating:

Coating thickness: greater than 7 mm, less than or equal to 45 mm.

Appearance: granular surface, low density.

Thermal conductivity: low.

Fire resistance limit: greater than 2 hours.

Composition: mostly inorganic materials, so the fire resistance is stable and the long-term use is better.

Characteristics: Due to the larger particles, the appearance of the coating is uneven, affecting the aesthetics, so it is mostly used in structural concealment projects.

 

When choosing a fireproof coating, it is necessary to make comprehensive considerations according to the actual situation of the steel structure plant, fire resistance requirements, decorative effect, and economy. At the same time, ensure that the selected fireproof coating complies with the relevant standards and norms to guarantee the fire safety of the plant.
