The space frame structure has the advantages of a lightweight, high rigidity, good seismic performance, and other advantages in terms of force, as well as being conducive to mass production, ensuring the quality of component processing and other production and construction advantages, and its design practice has attracted widespread attention. Based on the development of the computer industry in the design industry, the space frame structure has developed rapidly in China in the past ten years.

At present, there are thousands of space frame structures built in China. In 1991, 11 of the 13 venues of the 11th Asian Games venue building in Beijing used space frames and space frames, of which space frames accounted for more than half. The well-known Capital Gymnasium, with a plane size of 99m×112.2m, is the space frame with the largest span among the rectangular plane roofs in China. Most of the stadiums in various provinces, cities, and regions use space frame structure roofs. Built-in 1996, the four-seater hangar of the Capital Airport has a plane size of (153+153)m×90m, which is the single space frame structure with the largest building coverage area in China. The hangars of large-scale airports such as Chengdu Shuangliu Airport hangar (plan size 87m×140m) and Shanghai Hongqiao Airport hangar (plan size 95m×150m) all adopt large-span space frame structure.

In addition, the application of space frame structure in large column space frame industrial buildings has also been developed rapidly. In the past ten years, the space frame structure has been widely used in the housing cover of industrial plants in China, and its building coverage area exceeds 3 million square meters, which is the world’s leading. Yunnan Yuxi Cigarette Factory has a space frame-connected factory building of 120,000 square meters, and the largest space frame span of the industrial workshop is the newly built factory building of Shanghai Jiangnan Shipyard. In the automotive industry, the light engine joint workshop of the First Automobile Manufacturing Plant uses a bolted ball joint space frame of nearly 40,000 m2, the golf car assembly plant has a welding ball joint space frame of nearly 80,000 m2, and the Tianjin Seamless Steel Pipe Plant The processing workshop uses a space frame of 60,000 m2.

From a national perspective, it has become more common for space frame structures to be used in industrial plants. In order to increase the rigidity of the structure, reduce the peak value of the internal force, use small materials and make it easy to manufacture, transport, and install, China began to use three-layer space frames in the late 1980s, and a total of 10 buildings have been built so far. The first built three-layer space frame is the hangar of Changsha Huanghua Airport. The roof size is 48m×64m, the space frame height is 5m, and the opening side is a four-layer space frame with a height of 7.5m. The four-position hangar of the Capital International Airport adopts a three-layer space frame with slanted quadrangular pyramid welded ball joints. The actual plane size of the two space frame frames is 84m×150m, and the space frame height is 6m. It is also the three-layer space frame with the largest span in China.
